With
her newest release HALF WILD, singer/songwriter and guitarist Julia
Macklin demonstrates once again her strong gift for lyrical, sensitive,
sometimes sweet, sometimes angry, always beautiful songwriting. Produced by Chris
Cunningham (guitarist for Katell Keineg, Gavin Friday, Omar Faruk, Susan McKeown
and the Chanting House, Marianne Faithfull, Trey Gunn, Boukman Eksperyans, Lori
Carson, Hal Willner, Sloan Wainwright, Marshall Crenshaw), the album contains
eight original songs plus a haunting rendition of Eleanor Rigby. The album was
two years in the making; the productions of these songs exhibit a thoughtfulness
and maturity that makes the wait well worth it. Julia writes songs about loneliness,
heartache, joy, and spirituality in an evocative and subtle way that is more like
poetry than anything else.
In 1998 Julia released her debut self-titled EP, produced by New York session drummer Tom Curiano, which hinted at the breadth of performance of which Julia is capable. Julian Coryell, son of jazz great Larry Coryell, added expertly layered guitars to Tom's soulful and sensitive drumming, and Marina Belica, formerly of the band October Project, joined Julia on vocals, creating a lush harmonic background.
Shortly
after the release of her first album, Julia approached Chris Cunningham to collaborate,
record, and perform with her in the studio and on stage. This relationship proved
fruitful to both Chris and Julia, and resulted in a creative union that suited
Julia's songs perfectly. Julia and Chris share a love of odd rhythms and time
signatures, and Chris' love of Middle Eastern tonality and mood adds the perfect
exotic flavor to Julia's simple, poignant writing.
Julia was born in Wisconsin,
raised on Long Island, and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. She studied
voice and guitar at the Boces vocational music and arts school part time during
high school, and has performed with several choirs, most recently the Brooklyn
Philharmonia, performing pieces by Handel, Benjamin Britten, Kodaly, Poulenc,
Bach, and Mozart. During and after university, Julia performed solo in coffeehouses
in Vermont, New York, and Washington DC. She then began collaborating, performing,
and recording with local musicians in the New York area, starting her first band,
called Molly's Last Word, in the early 90's. Julia is currently playing live in
the New York city area and writing songs for her upcoming release.
